Gardaí issue bogus calls warning

GARDAI in Killarney have today warned the public to be alert to the dangers posed by scammers contacting them by telephone purporting to represent the Revenue Commissioners.

This activity has been linked to criminals and Gardai are at pains to stress that the calls, during which personal details are sought, are bogus.

A Garda spokesperson said people should not, under any circumstances, give out bank account or any other personal information over the phone and they should contact Killarney Garda Station or the Revenue Commissioners if any issues should arise.

Meanwhile, numerous people in Killarney have been targeted by bogus calls to mobile phones and the scam sees the caller hanging up before the call is answered in the hope that the intended victim will call back. They will then be penalised with exorbitant premium rate changes on their next bill or their phone credit will be drained.

The calls are understood to originate from Serbia and Albania  and the scam numbers include 381-63-017-178 and 355-69-811-0949.
