GARDAI in Killarney have warned that they will be enforcing a zero tolerance policy in terms of traffic management and crowd control during this weekend’s Rally of the Lakes.

They said they are expecting “a massive influx” of up to 60,000 visitors for the big event and they will treat it as a family weekend that can be enjoyed safely by everyone.

“The rally weekend creates a significant increase in policing demands for An Garda Síochána. The entire weekend is there to be enjoyed by the whole family and that is exactly what we want to see, people enjoying themselves,” said Sgt Dermot O’Connell

This year’s policing operation has built on the success of recent years and it sets out a plan of action following consultations with the many stakeholders.

There will be numerous checkpoints set up over the weekend as well as increased high visibility patrols in the Killarney area.

“Any anti-social behaviour, public drinking or reckless behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated,” Sgt O’Connell said.

“We are asking anyone who is attending the rally this weekend to park up the car for the evening if they are having a drink and remember that they may still be over the limit the morning after a night out,’ he added.
