Gardai appeal for witnesses to come forward

A man has died and his wife was seriously injured in what is alleged to have been a double stabbing in a graveyard during a funeral this Wednesday.

Gardai have sealed off Rath Cemetery in Tralee and an investigation into the violent and shocking incident is underway.

The couple, understood to be from Cork, were attending the funeral of a young woman when the altercation broke out shortly before noon.

The man, reported to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His wife was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry where she is said to be in a serious condition having suffered a number of wounds in the attack.

Although gardai have spoken to a number of people who were in attendance at the funeral, no arrests have yet been made and the office of the State pathologist has been alerted.

The area at the cemetery has been sealed off for a detailed technical examination and CCTV footage in the area is being collected.

The Garda Press office told KillarneyToday.com that members of the force are currently attending the scene and confirmed that a man in his 40s had died. His body has been taken to University Hospital Kerry.

“No further information is available at this time,” a spokesman said.

Anyone with any information that might be of assistance is urged to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300 or any garda station.
