Garda warning over bank account con jobs

GARDAI in Killarney have warned the public to beware of bogus telephone callers using various means to try to garner information on people’s bank account details or encouraging people to transfer various amounts of money to overseas accounts.

There are several similar scams in operation and the impression is given that some of the calls are originating from different counties whereas, in fact, it is the work of overseas criminals using relatively sophisticated scamming technology.

“They are very convincing. People should never transfer money without visiting a bank,” a Garda spokesperson told KillarneyToday.com.

In one case, a Kerryman lost close on €3,000 of his savings when he fell victim to an elaborate phone scam with the caller, claiming to be from Bank of Ireland, informing him his account had been compromised.

The culprit, a woman, said his funds had been transferred to a bank in Lebanon and, during the course of an elaborate con job, he ended up losing €2,800.
