Garda checkpoints on main and minor roads

A major policing operation is focusing on encouraging people to adhere to public health measures

NO additional cases of Covid-19 were reported in Kerry this Tuesday and the number of people known to be infected in the county remains at 288.

There were, however, 59 new deaths and 229 new cases confirmed nationally.

That brings the total death total to 1,159 and there are now 19,877 known cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.

Of the laboratory confirmed deaths, 47 per cent had been hospitalised, 5.8 per cent had been admitted to intensive care and 86 per cent were reported to have had underlying health conditions.

53 of the fatalities were male, 47 per cent were female, the median age was 83 and the mean age was 81.

Meanwhile, gardai in Killarney and other parts of the county have significantly stepped up their checkpoints on main and minor roads to prevent motorists from making unnecessary journeys outside the permission 2km from home limit.

From now right through the bank holiday weekend Operation Fanacht will see large-scale checkpoints in towns and villages to support travel restrictions put in place to help flatten the curve and save lives.

“There has been great compliance with the travel restrictions and we want to thank the public for this. However, it remains vital that people continue to play their part and stay at home if possible as this will continue to save lives,” a spokesman said.
