Garda accident reports will prove key

The busy junction at Farranfore has seen many crashes down through the years

ACTION has been sought to address signage and road marking issues at one of the busiest and, potentially, one of the most dangerous traffic junctions in the county.

Ongoing problems at the junction in the heart of Farranfore village, on the main Killarney-Tralee road with turn-offs for both Firies and Currow, have been highlighted at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae pointed out that the junction – where numerous accident have occurred over the years – was the scene of two very serious accidents very recently and something has to be done to rectify the problems in the vicinity.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae: concerns

She asked council officials to raise the matter with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and to ask the authority to increase signage on both the Firies and the Currow approaches to the village and to reinstate the yellow box lines to increase safety.

A council spokesperson said the local authority will review the accident reports provided by An Garda Siochana to discover the likely cause of the incidents that occurred.

“This will determine if any improvement works are required at this junction.,” a spokesperson said.

“Council engineers have inspected the junction and will renew the lining on the approach roads”.

The council also acknowledged that the yellow junction box located on the main N22 requires renewal but the current signage on the road is in accordance with required regulations.
