A SUM of €1.6 million is to be divided between primary and secondary schools in Kerry as part of a wider €50 million nationwide announcement.
This comes on top of the €1.9 million allocated to Kerry schools three weeks ago for minor works grants, both of which will be paid in December 2020 as the department’s capital budget was increased to allow for these to be paid before the start of 2021.
The new allocation, announced by Education Minister and Kerry TD Norma Foley, will see €878,286 going to primary schools and €747,525 to post primary.
This funding can be used to purchase equipment, such as projectors and tablets, or to support the use of online learning platforms.
The grants will be automatically issued to primary, special and post-primary schools in early December and they will be paid on the basis of school type and enrollment.
For example, a 60-pupil primary school will receive €4,365 and a 300-pupil school will receive up to €12,475. In the case of a post-primary school, this will consist of a €2,000 basic grant plus €43.26 per mainstream student and €47.58 per student in DEIS schools.
“A 500-student school will receive up to €36,880 and a 1,000 student school would receive up to €62,560.
“This year’s extended period of school closure has served to underscore the immense value of education and its power in our children and young people’s lives,” Minister Foley said.
