Several Killarney projects have been included for funding as part of a €440 million allocation of grants to local authorities for national roads, active travel initiatives and greenways.
Announcing the funding, Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the allocations will help advance and, in some cases complete, a number of projects that have been in the pipeline for quite some time.
He said the provision for the Fossa area is particularly welcome and it advances the overall aim of improving the network of pavements from Ballydowney to the Gap Cross and beyond.
The Fossa funding was also welcomed by Cllr Brendan Cronin who had campaigned long and hard for improvement and safety works to be carried out there.
Cllr Cronin had initially highlighted the need for safety measures to be implemented on the road between Fossa National School and the Prince of Peace Church which is particularly busy – and quite dangerous – at school drop-off and collection times.
He had tabled several motions at municipal district and full council meetings on the need for improvements at Ballydowney and Killalee.
