Funding to tackle school safety fears

Cllr Michael Cahill: Called for funding

CONCERNS that road safety issues were compromising the safety of children attending a childcare facility – and their parents and staff – have been eased following the allocation of €60,000 for traffic calming measures in the vicinity.

Cllr Michael Cahill had highlighted the situation at the Scamps and Scholars facility on Langford Street, Killorglin and he had asked Kerry County Council to seek the funding from the Department of Transport, Sport and Tourism.

He said safety works had become a matter of extreme urgency because of a very significant increase in traffic using the roadway which leads to Killorglin Sports Complex, Killorglin Community College and Fexco as well as a number of housing estates.

Lining and signing measures have already been introduced at the location but, in view of the level of activity there, Kerry County Council forwarded a submission to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport seeking funding to introduce a raised table or other appropriate safety feature for an urban environment.

Welcoming the allocation, Cllr Cahill said: “The safety of our children is of paramount importance”.
