From Darkness into Light, Nathan will be remembered

Ceremonial lanterns will light up the early morning sky and illuminate the way as thousands of men, women, teenagers and children – many with their canine companions – will stride out in Killarney in the early hours of this coming Saturday to raise funds for Pieta and to honour the memory of a popular local teenager whose memory lives 16 years after his devastating passing.

Nathan O’Carroll was just 14 years of age when he died by suicide on December 16, 2007 but his memory has been kept alive as people descend on Killarney every year to support the 5k fundraiser.

Nathan’s Walk – part of the nationwide Darkness into Light project – has already helped raise hundreds of thousands of euro to help fund the work being undertaken by Pieta and this year’s event, will add significantly to that.

The event, organised by Nathan’s parents, Denis and Marie O’Carroll, and their family and friends, will commence at Killarney Racecourse and wind its way through the national park.

The official launch and registration for this year’s event – held in association with Pieta and Electric Ireland – took place on Tuesday night at JM Reidy’s bar and restaurant on Main Street.

Natha’s Walk will commence at 4.15am at Killarney Racecourse and the participants will walk through the national park until dawn breaks in memory of all those who passed away as a result of suicide and to create a greater awareness of self-harm.

Registration will again be available this coming Thursday and Friday night prior to the walk and two hours before the event actually commences at Killarney Racecourse on Saturday morning.

Three cheers for a successful live registration at JM Reidy’s for Josephine Cronin, Caoimhe Doyle, Aisling Doyle, Mary Doyle, Cathal Walshe and Maggie McAuliffe

People can register at the racecourse on Thursday, May 4 (4pm-8pm), Friday, May 5 (4pm-9pm) and, just before the walk commences, on Saturday, May 6 (2am to 4am).

Those who wish to register via the Pieta website https://www.darknessintolight.ie/sign-up can do so by accessing ‘Kerry’ in the dropdown menu.

Everybody is welcome to participant and, in doing so they will be supporting a very worthy cause and remembering a much-loved and fondly remembered Killarney schoolboy.
