Frankie had star appeal but no winners

THERE was no opportunity for a trademark leap from a winning horse but punters didn’t seem to mind that Frankie Dettori didn’t have a winner in the four races in which he competed at Killarney Races yesterday.

He came agonisingly close in the Ahern’s Garage Castleisland Irish EBF Maiden on the Dermot Weld trained Time Tunnel but he was pipped by half a length by Jessica Harrington’s Tauran Shaman.

The Italian superstar came even closer in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cairn Rouge Stakes when Lady Wannabe was about to zip past the post only to be edged out, in a dramatic photo finish, by 5-2 favourite Viadera.

Dettori finished fourth on Dermot Weld’s Mujid in the Sauternes Cup Rated Race won by Aidan O’Brien’s Turnberry Isle.

The three-time champion jockey was a massive attraction at the races and his attendance represented a major coup.

He was welcomed to the track by the Chairman of Killarney Race Company Gerard Coughlan and Racing Manager Philip O’Brien.
