MANY tributes have been paid to a Kerry priest and author who, during the course of his lifetime, published several books on liturgy and homiletics, addressing such subjects as celebrating weddings and funerals as well as featuring some great stories and reflections.

Fr Flor McCarthy, a member of the Salesian Order and a catechist in second level schools, was a native of Mangerton, Kilgarvan but he worked throughout his life in parishes in Dublin and the US, spending many years in Porterstown and Crumlin in Dublin.

A wonderful storyteller, he was very well known in the Salesian community throughout the world and he will be particularly fondly remembered in St Stephen’s Parish, in Warwick, New York where he spent a great deal of time and visited every summer.

Fr Flor, who passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit at University Hospital Kerry, is survived by his sister Peggy, nephews Denis and Murt (Kilgarvan), John and Dan (USA), his nieces Anne (Ballymacelligott), Margaret (Galway) and Ann (USA), grandnephews, grandnieces, extended family, clergy and parishioners.

He was predeceased by his brothers Danny (New York), Johnny and Patsy (Kilgarvan) and his sister Sr Fatima (Texas).

In accordance with government and HSE guidelines, and in the interest of public health, a private family funeral will take place for Fr Flor.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 12 noon in St Patrick’s Church, Kilgarvan and it will be live streamed on the Kilgarvan parish Facebook page. Burial will take place afterwards in the local cemetery.
