A new state-of-the-art building project for the provision of special education has been approved for Holy Cross Mercy School in Killarney.
The project will deliver four new modern classrooms tailored for special education needs.
As part of the major additional accommodation programme, four new special education teaching rooms will also be created while two rooms to deliver English as an additional language will be created from two existing classrooms.

A withdrawal room and an additional bathroom are also included in the plans.
Announcing details, Education Minister, Norma Foley said it would further enhance the provision of special education at Holy Cross Mercy School.
“This major building project is an endorsement of the school community for their tireless commitment, passion and endeavour to providing inclusive education to the young people of Killarney and surrounding areas and I look forward to this project continuing at pace,” she said.
The Holy Cross Mercy project is one one of several schools in Killarney earmarked for major redevelopment since Minister Foley took up office.
A major new school complex for St Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney was approved in March 2021 while, four months later, a multi-million school building project was announced for St Brendan’s College in Killarney.
The latter will provide state-of-the-art facilities for 750 pupils plus three special educational needs classes along with one class to specifically cater for children with multiple disabilities.

The extensive refurbishment will transform St Brendan’s College by providing 26 general classrooms, five science labs, two multimedia rooms, a textiles room and new classrooms for music, arts and crafts, home economics, construction studies, engineering and technology.
The building project will also include staff rooms, an office, a GP room and data communication centre as well as a new PE hall and fitness suite.
Three special education classrooms will also be built as part of the school refurbishment and a multiple disabilities classroom will also be provided for within the plans.
On completion, the entire building project will replace the existing school structure with a state-of-the-art campus and facilities.
