THERE was huge excitement in the INEC in Killarney where 66 primary school teams from all over South Kerry competed in the annual Killarney Credit Union Schools’ Quiz.
Fossa National School emerged victorious in the Under 11 category and Realt na Mara, Tuosist came first in the 11-13 age category.
This year, 22 primary schools were represented in the quiz with parents, pupils and teachers all in attendance in the INEC.
Killarney Credit Union has been hosting the quiz for 20 years and this year was the largest entry with students travelling from as far Lauragh National School in Kenmare, a journey of 60km.
It was a very competitive final with tie-break rounds to establish the overall winners. The winning team members from Fossa National School was Finn Kennelly, Robert Brooks, Matthew O’Connor and Roan Daly.
The winning students from Realt na Mara were Aishling Rochford, Asher Grant, Dylan O’Sullivan and Abby Little John.
The first and second placed winning teams will go on to represent their school in their age category at Chapter 23 level. In the Under 11 category, second place went to St Oliver’s National School, Killarney and third place to St John’s National School, Kenmare.
In the 11-13 age category, Cullina National School came in second place and third place went to Gaelscoil Faithleann, Killarney.
Killarney Credit Union Youth Officer, Joy Clifford, thanked all those that participated in the quiz this year as well as parents, pupils and teachers who attended on the day.
“We would also like to acknowledge the staff, management and volunteers who helped out on the day also in correcting, stewarding and adjudication,” she said.
Each student received a certificate of participation and the winners received trophies and a perpetual plaque will be given to the first placed winning schools.
