Former Garda chief is honoured in Kerry

Historian and author Donal O’Sullivan who received the Heritage-Award from the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society on Sunday.

The 2024 Kerry Heritage Award has been awarded a former Chief Superintendent of An Garda Síochána in Kerry, Donal O’Sullivan.

He is a historian of renown and has published several books, particularly detailing the history of the Royal Irish Constabulary and An Garda Síochána as well as many aspects of local history in Kerry and his native County Cork.

The award is presented each year by the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to heritage and history in Kerry and the presentation was made at a ceremony at the Rose Hotel in Tralee on Sunday afternoon.

Mr O’Sullivan, who is a native of Caheragh, Co Cork, became a Garda Superintendent in Tralee in 1983, being promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent in 1988, a post he held until 1996. The father of eight has a passion for local history and is a lifelong member of the Kerry Archeaological and Historical Society.

Among his many publications are Irish Constabularies, 1822-1922: The First History of a Century of Policing in Ireland and District Inspector John A. Kearney: The RIC Man Who Befriended Sir Roger Casement.

President of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, Tony Bergin said: “We are delighted to be recognising a long term Society member, Donal O’Sullivan this year. He has contributed significantly to Kerry history through his research, lectures and books on numerous topics over the years.”
