The new 130-bed community nursing unit, currently under construction in Killarney, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, it has been confirmed.
Work on the development, located on HSE-owned land just off the Killarney bypass road, commenced last December and the plan is to have it ready for occupation within 24 months.
The facility will replace the current services provided in St Columbanus Home and the former St Anne’s District Hospital which is now used as a rehabilitation unit.
There are no clear plans as of yet as to what will become of those two buildings going forward but it is known that residents will move from St Columbanus Home before new residents will be admitted.

The new nursing unit will be made up of four 25-bed units and a 30-bed dementia unit and it will be all ensuite single-room accommodation.
Plans for this and the other new community nursing units in the HSE capital plan are person-centered and future proofed to meet the needs of older people requiring residential accommodation.
Each of the four planned units will have a sitting room, a sun room, a quiet room, a visitors’ room and an activities room and there will be ample outdoor space in the form of secure landscaped gardens.
The new unit will comply with all HIQA standards and HSE policies in regard to space, privacy and dignity in a new state-of-the-art facility.
Access to the new community nursing unit will be via the Killarney bypass and the N22.
