Fleadh bosses set to welcome ‘the perfect act’

Kila: Bono said they lit the fuse for the big bang

TRAD stars KÍLA have been announced as the headline act for this year’s Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí Street Music Festival in Milltown on June 22.

The concert will be part of a huge range of free entertainment over the five days of the fleadh.

Kila have played all over the world and, while rooted in tradition, they are inspired by a myriad of musical influences worldwide.

The band’s eight members stem from differing musical backgrounds, including Irish traditional, classical, folk and rock and they lost among their fans U2 frontman Bono who once remarked “You get the feeling Kila lit the fuse for the big bang”.

Kila will play on the gig rig, the open air stage in the square in Milltown.

Fleadh organising committee PRO, Chris Horan, remarked: “We are thrilled to welcome Kila. We work hard to promote traditional music and Kila are a perfect act for this year.

The fleadh opens on Wednesday, June 19 and that night will feature singing club competitions which will run throughout the week in the Nagle Rice Community Hall and the Presentation Secondary School.

Thursday night will include sessions in local bars and Friday night will see the return of the Shandrum Ceili Band for the first of two open-air ceilidh. Saturday will feature Kila and local acts, while Sunday will be a day-long family day of music and kids’ entertainment.

The Denis Courtney street entertainment competition will run during the early afternoon throughout Milltown and novelty acts will be at large also.
