Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club members Ben Kelliher and Brian McCarthy made their mark in the national under 16 championships at Hillview in Clonmel last Saturday where they found themselves locked in a four player play-off with Gowran duo Jack McShane and Harry Concannon after all four finished on six under par.
It was still level between three of them after the extra nine holes but as Ben went to the 10th tee-box with Brian and McShane. He birdied the hole to join Creagh Courtney and Conor McCarthy as the club’s only winners of the Eugene McCarthy Cup.
Brian finished second for the second straight year on countback from McShane as both Ben and Brian combined later with Listowel duo Ajay Barrett and Jayden Chute to win Kerry’s fifth straight title in the Inter-County event as part of the ‘Gold’ Team.
Fionn McMonagle and Aodhan O’Halloran finished just behind Concannon in the battle for the under 13 prize but well done to all concerned on their performances and thanks to Deerpark’s under 16 officers Gearóid Cronin and Derry McCarthy for looking after the players on the day.
