ANOTHER 28 people in Kerry have been diagnosed with coronavirus since midnight.
It brings the total number of new infections in the county in the past 14 days to 1,085.
Nationally today, a further 51 deaths and 2,608 cases were confirmed top the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, bring the total number of fatalities to 2,818 and the number of infections to 181,922.
49 of the deaths occurred this month, the median age of those who died was 80 and the age range was from 58 to 103 years.
Early this afternoon, there were 1,943 patients with Covid-19 in hospital and 214 of them were being treated in intensive care. There have been 105 people with the virus admitted to hospital in the past 24 hours.
Of the cases notified today, 1,346 are female, 1,230 are male and 55 per cent are under 45 years of age.
1,019 of the newly diagnosed cases were in Dublin, 204 in Cork, 135 in Donegal, 132 in Galway and 131 in Kildare with the remaining 987 cases spread across all other counties, including the 28 in Kerry.
Department of Health Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, said while clear progress is being made in reducing incidence, there is still a very large burden of infection.
On December 1 when restrictions were eased, the five-day moving average was 261 cases per day but today it is almost 10 times that number at 2,430 cases per day.
“We are witnessing the effects of high levels of community transmission through our hospital and ICU admissions and reported deaths. We need to continue to work together to drive this infection down and bring the disease back under control,” Dr Holohan said.
