A PROPOSAL to install traffic lights at the exit from and entrance to Killarney Fire Station is to be brought before the municipal district council.
Cllr Donal Grady, a retired fire officer, said lights are required to assist fire crews and appliances to attend emergencies.
“At present there are long delays there. This was to be done several years ago,” he said.
The area is likely to get busier in the years ahead as a €400,000 upgrade has been approved for the fire station.
The long-promised refurbishment was included in an overall €61 million capital programme announced by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien.

Kerry County Council has plans to add a 160m² extension to the existing base to incorporate an additional three-bay facility to house fire appliances and emergency vehicles.
Interior refurbishments are also in the pipeline to upgrade the administrative and ancillary areas.
The redevelopment is required to cater for appliances that are currently parked outside of the station which is serviced by two seven-strong crews.
Cllr Grady has also pointed out that all the trees along the bypass road – where the fire station is located – need to be topped urgently.
“They seem to be a danger and are blocking some of the public lights,” he said.
