
EXCITEMENT is building in Killarney in advance this year’s Kerry Film Festival and the team behind the film, The Crest – a story of family, immigration and the value of tradition and culture – has arrived in town and will be in attendance at the opening night screening on Thursday.
The 18th festival will run for four days and nights, bringing exceptional short films from around the world along with national and regional programmes. This year’s festival will also host a platform for first-time feature film makers and the programme of events will be supervised by the festival’s artistic director Maeve McGrath.
These discovery features will screen on Thursday and each feature film will be preceded by a featured short film. There will also be school screenings supported by the IFI and film festival exchange favourites, Nickel Film Festival Tour.

Ireland’s submission for the foreign language category at the 90th annual Academy Awards, Song of Granite, which revolves around the life of the great traditional Irish singer Joe Heaney, will screen in Cinema Killarney on Friday as will the Irish premiere of Score, a film music documentary that brings Hollywood’s premier composers together to give viewers a privileged look inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the film score.
The Kerry Film Festival will also will host the Irish premiere of Lies We Tell, starring Gabriel Byrne and Harvey Keitel which delves into a dangerous urban underworld, with dark, harrowing practices, and it features a sinister criminal figure who will test him to his very limits.
At the Killarney Plaza Hotel from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday there will be industry sessions, including panel discussions and Q & A sessions.
Kerry natives Maura Kelly, an Emmy-winning producer and John Flahive will discuss working abroad in film and media, Katie McCullough from Festival Formula will guide delegates through the vast film festival landscape and offer advice and tips on building a festival profile and action plan while BIFA producer Andy McDermott will discuss the making of feature film, Lies We Tell, from development to funding to casting and production.
