Fianna Fail picks its troops to fight the local elections

Outgoing councillor Niall Kelleher was last night selected unopposed by Fianna Fail to contest next year’s local elections in the Killarney Municipal District.

He was first elected in 2014 and retained his seat in the 2019 elections and he will be hoping to make it three-in-a-row at the polls next summer.

The party convention was held in the Brandon Hotel in Tralee and Deputy Niall Collins presided with Education Minister, Norma Foley TD and local party membership in attendance.

Also selected on the night were Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald for the Castleisland Local Electoral Area and Cllr Michael Sheehy for the Tralee Local Electoral Area.

With Cllr Johnnie Wall having announced his decision to retire next June, Cllr Sheehy’s running mate will be Anne O’Sullivan who is the parliamentary assistant to Minister Foley.

Former Kerry County Board treasurer and current Munster Council official, Dermot Weeshie Lynch, who had expressed an interest in contesting the election in the Tralee area, withdrew from contention but he hopes to be added to the ticket at a later date.
