FF pledge to return greater say at town hall level

Killarney Town Hall: More local political power needs to be restored

The commitment by Fianna Fáil in its manifesto to restore power and accountability at local level has been enthusiastically welcomed by the party’s Killarney-based general election candidate Linda Gordon Kelleher.

She said she is a big advocate for the restoration of town councils, especially Killarney Town Council, and she is delighted that commitment is being made.

Fianna Fáil has committed to establish local councils in towns with a population of over 7,500 people, on a phased basis.

“We can see the shortcomings of local government, including the lack of independent financing and the need to serve the people.

“I believe by re-evaluating these issues locally will only be a positive for all involved local representatives, executives and, ultimately and most importantly, constituents,” Ms Gordon Kelleher stated.

She added that Fianna Fáil is committed to convening a local democracy taskforce to finalise the reform of local government, bring forward legislative and regulatory proposals required to rebalance the democratic deficit between elected members and officials.

“I believe there needs to be political representation in Killarney and that the town needs to have its voice. By having our voice heard, we can meet the needs of local constituents and businesses,” the Fianna Fail candidate stated.
