KILLARNEY actor Michael Fassbender has commenced filming for what could well be the most successful and high-profile project of his already hugely impressive career

The Fossa man is playing the role of technology entrepreneur and inventor Steve Jobs in a big budget biopic being filmed on set in San Francisco by Universal Pictures.

It has been reported that Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale were also on a shortlist but Fassbender succeeded given his incredible acting talent and the fact that, physically, he is quite similar in height and build to Jobs.

Fassbender, now an established Hollywood A-list star, is portraying the legendary tech genius and Apple Inc founder, who passed away in 2011 of cancer at age 56.

His co-stars include Seth Rogen as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Kate Winslet who plays former Apple Macintosh marketing guru Joanna Hoffman and Jeff Daniels as former Apple boss John Sculley.

Directed by the award-winning Danny Boyle and written by Aaron Sorkin, the movie began filming in the US on Tuesday and is scheduled to hit the big screens early in 2016.

Film industry watchers have predicted that the role is sufficiently high-profile to earn Fassbender a shot as the Oscars and all the other major awards.

Fassbender reached superstar status through his power-packed roles in a succession of box office hits, including 12 Years a Slave, Hunger, X-Men and Prometheus.
