Family ‘blown away’ by offers of support

Family holiday: Denis, Sharon, Sophie and Noah Myers

THE family that had two expensive bicycles vandalised on the last night of their holiday in Killarney have said they were “blown away” by the generosity and support of local people who offered help after reading a report on their plight on KillarneyToday.com.

Denis and Sharon Myers, from Mitchelstown, Co Cork, and their children Sophie (12) and six-year-old Noah, told how the bicycles – one of which they adapted to transport their disabled young son – were extensively damaged by vandals in town on Friday night.

“It appears that somebody had tried to steal them and because they couldn’t, they mangled all the wheels, making them absolutely useless,” Sharon had explained.

After they shared their story on KillarneyToday.com, several people got in touch to offer support with a number pledging donations or offering to set up a fund to help repair or replace the bicycles.

“Although we are incredibly blown away by the generosity of people, we cannot with a clear conscience accept any offers of donations as we firmly believe there are way more deserving charities that need these funds,” said Sharon.

She said the reason they highlighted the incident in the first place was to show those who carried out this act of vandalism that there is a story and a huge impact behind such acts and that it’s not ok to do such things.

“This has, in no way, impacted on the wonderful week we have had in Killarney and Kerry. We’ll be back to Killarney again before the end of the summer, albeit with wonky bicycles if my husband manages to fix them,” Sharon added.

One of the bicycles damaged was used to transport their young son, Noah, who has Escobar syndrome, a very rare congenital disorder that affects his joints and he also suffers from scoliosis and respiratory problems.
