DON’T tell the Grinch but tonight’s Christmas in Killarney parade was, without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest, the most colourful, the most exciting and the most spectacular the town has ever seen.
The official countdown is underway and excitement was at fever pitch as the fabulous festive floats, fun-loving Disney stars and, of course, Santa Claus himself tuned Killarney into tinseltown for a glorious evening of joy and celebrations.
Thousands of people lined the streets and every vantage point was taken well in advance as the colourful carnival wound its way slowly along Beech Road, Mission Road, East Avenue Road, Fairhill, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and New Street with the ticker-tape celebrations drawing gasps of sheer delight from wide-eyed children who were almost beside themselves with anticipation and excitement.

True to form, the progressive Christmas in Killarney committee, spearheaded by Kate O’Leary, ensured that there were several new additions to enjoy and amuse this year with giant Christmas characters – including incredible illuminated mythical horses – talking to the streets to meet and greet locals and visitors.
And many of those who were witnessing the magic for the first time could scarcely believe the sheer quality and incredible atmosphere that was provided for them absolutely free of charge.
The biggest cheer of the night, not surprisingly, was reserved for Santa himself and he was master of all he surveyed as the reindeer led his toy-packed sleigh through the town.
Mayor of Killarney, Cllr John Sheahan, and his Killarney Municipal District Council colleagues were Santa’s not-so-little helpers for the occasion as they dispensed sweets and treats – and Christmas cheer – along the route.
Local school children also participated in the parade and they were delighted to get up close to Santa with many availing of the opportunity to whisper their wish-list in his ear.
And those that missed the excitement cam take great consolation from the fact that there will be Mini Magic Christmas parades every Saturday before Christmas, all commencing at 6pm.
