Everybody has a part to play to stop wildfires

Wildfires can cause havoc and put lives in danger

WITH a forecast of dry weather for the weekend a Status Orange warning for forest fires has been issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine from this Monday until noon on Friday.

The Kerry Fire Service and Kerry County Council has issued a notice asking the public to be extra vigilant over the next few days.

Wildfires can have a catastrophic impact on upland habitats and rural communities, putting homes, property and lives at risk and diverting emergency services from their main tasks.

“Everybody has a part to play in protecting our unique rural landscapes, communities, habitats and forest resources from the threats posed by wildfire,” a spokesperson for the Fire Service said.

The following advice has been issued to reduce the risks of fire:

  • Do not light fires in or around forests or on open land
  • Do not block forest entrances or roads
  • If you see a fire, report it immediately to the emergency services: Dial 999 or 112.
  • Report any illegal and suspicious activity to the Gardai.
  • Do not approach fires and do not attempt to extinguish fires yourself
