Estimate of €5,000-€8,000 on stadium original

A 1943 painting of Kerry’s most famous sporting landmark – Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney – is to come under the hammer at a public auction with an asking price of between €5,000 and €8,000.

The sale a signed Harry Kernoff original watercolour, measuring 14 inches x 10 inches, will be handled by Adam’s auctioneers in Dublin on Wednesday of next week and it is expected to attract great interest.

The painting depicts a couple, with the lady wearing a headscarf, sitting on the hill overlooking the park where a game is in progress. It features a fabulous view of the MacGillycuddy Reeks and woodlands  in the background and smoke can be seen billowing from the chimneys of houses in St Brendan’s Place.

Born in London, Harry Kernoff (1900-1974) was famous for his paintings of Dublin streets and landmarks as well as delightful landscapes, illustrations and portraits.

His father was Russian and worked as a furniture maker and his mother was from an old Spanish-Jewish family and Harry studied in the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and he was a long-time exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy.
