A total of eight arrests for drink or drug driving were made by Gardai during the annual Rally of the Lakes weekend in Killarney with several drivers apprehended and charged for a number of other road traffic related offences.
The figures were released at a Garda Policing Committee meeting in Killarney and it highlighted the need for vigilance during the rally event held in May which is regarded as the jewel in the crown of Irish rallying.
A specific operation was set up to target boy racer activity and there were 35 fixed charge penalty notices issued for driving without due care and attention.
In addition to that, seven vehicles were seized during the course of the weekend there were 16 incidents of dangerous driving recorded and 42 fines issues for speeding.
Gardai also confirmed that 10 fixed penalty notices were handed out to drivers caught a mobile phone while behind the wheel of a vehicle.
