The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has borrowed a phrase used in a campaign to encourage the public in Killarney to report crime in a new initiative to clampdown on poor hygiene practices.
Almost two-thirds of adults do not know how to make a complaint to authorities regarding unfit food or poor hygiene practices and it has led to a new awareness campaign, See Something, Say Something, which informs consumers on their right to safe food.
The See Something, Say Something slogan was also used in a high visibility freephone campaign, launched in Killarney in 2019, to encourage the public to contact gardai if they observed criminal activity.

The new campaign is supported by a robust online presence and includes several videos encouraging consumers to make a complaint if they experience unfit food or poor hygiene practices eating out or buying food.
Reporting a concern is easy and can be done via the FSAI website by completing a simple online complaint form to report a food business or food product.
Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI, emphasised the part the public can all play to help achieve safer food for better health.
“Consumers have a right to safe food and to get all the health benefits from safe food. Our new campaign empowers the public with the knowledge they need to file a complaint. Whether you’re buying food or eating out, you have a right to safe food, and you also have a right to exercise that right,” she said.
