THE Government has been urged to introduce rent caps in Kerry following the publication of a Daft.ie rental price report revealing that a three-bedroom house in the county costs an average of €689 per month to rent.
The report also suggests that the same house could be purchased, with a 3.5 per cent variable mortgage over 30 years, for €471 per month.
Raising the issue, Killarney-based Kerry Social Democrats representative, John O’Shea, said if the rate was to increase, even by plus tow per cent, the monthly mortgage repayment for this property would amount to €593 which is still €96 a month cheaper than the current average rental price.
“The report provided a worrying outlook for the future as the average rent in Kerry has risen by 10 per cent in the last year,” he said.
“As a people, we have endured enough now at this stage. Skyrocketing rents and a nationwide housing shortage has created a situation whereby an entire generation of people are locked out of the housing market and find themselves at the mercy of landlords and not for the first time in Irish history,” John O’Shea added.
He is supporting nationwide rent caps along with increased security of tenure and he said the time to act is now to ensure we protect the right to reasonable rent is protected.
