
A total of €3.5 million has been approved for Active Travel initiatives in Kerry and it will bring plans to develop several new cycle routes in Killarney closer to fruition.
The National Transport Authority today allocated funds to Ireland’s local authorities with a €290 million pot approved to support the rollout of walking and on walking and cycling infrastructure in 2024.
The substantial investment will fund approximately 800 Active Travel projects, contributing to the development of 1,000km of new and improved walking and cycling infrastructure across the country between 2020 and 2025.
The work will include the development of segregated cycle lanes and widened footpaths, new walking and cycling bridges.

The Killarney projects approved are:
- Rock Road (€1.2 million)
- Deerpark Road (€50,000)
- Gaescoil Faithleann-Chestnut Drive Road (€50,000)
- Flesk Walkway and Cycleway (€225,000)
- Park Road (€200,000)
- Fossa National School (€30,000)
Other Kerry projects to be funded include Green Street, Dingle; Sunhill, Killorglin; Bracker O’Regan Road, Tralee; Moyderwell Mercy Primary School, Tralee; Presentation Secondary School, Ballymullen, Tralee and Mercy Secondary School, Tralee.


The sum of €70,00 will be spent on providing parking spaces for bicycles at University Hospital Kerry.
Planning permission will be sought for a number of the projects and those that have already received planning will tender for the construction phase.
Welcoming the allocations, Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said it is a wonderful opportunity for Killarney to bring the council’s exciting plans fruition
“The €225,000 allocation for the Flesk Walkway and Cycleway from Ross Road to Muckross Road is particularly welcome as it will complete that project but the whole town is set to benefit from this focus on Active Travel initiatives,” he said.
Transport Minister, Eamon Ryan, said a key commitment in the Programme for Government has been the dedication to making walking, cycling and wheeling safer and much more accessible throughout the country.
“It’s great that this year we will hit the €1 billion investment mark. We are seeing the impact of this continued and substantial investment in our towns, villages and cities, where we are delivering large and small scale projects that are transforming where we live, making them much more attractive, safer and healthier,” he said.
