WORK has been completed on the provision of a number of parking areas and lay-by facilities near Killarney National Park on the busy Killarney-Kenmare Road.

The works, involving an investment of €200,000 at five locations, were funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme of the Department of Rural and Community Development and were carried out in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The areas included are very popular with outdoor lovers and the parking facilities will accommodate those who are out for a walk or a run in popular areas.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, has welcomed the developments.

“These works have improved parking facilities and access to trails including Dinis and the Cardiac Steps in Killarney National Park.

“These are some of the busiest parking areas used for accessing the national park and it is imperative that we have safe and accessible infrastructure to allow people to enjoy and explore the park,” he said.

“This year has thought us the value of the outdoors and projects such as these which improve and enhance access to outdoor infrastructure are more important than ever,” Mayor Cronin added.
