€14m for Kerry roads to include Killarney bypass

Road works ahead in Kerry

A grant of €3 million has been approved for the new Kerry-Cork Economic Corridor which will see a new bypass road from Farranfore to Lissivigeen, bypassing Killarney town.

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae said that while the official allocation announced by the government is €1 million, the figure is incorrect and a follow-up cover note will be issued to confirm that.

The funding is part of a €14 million allocation confirmed for Kerry by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Deputy Healy-Rae said it is the first real signal of intent which can make the vital project finally become a reality.

“We took the decision to support the government so we could help deliver in a meaningful way when it comes to allocating much needed funds for Kerry and today’s announcement is just an example of both Danny and myself delivering on what we said we would do,” commented the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture.

Meanwhile Deputy Danny Healy-Rae said he feels that the Killarney project is now something that is attainable due to the government’s renewed commitment.

“I can remember the many false dawns and disappointments over the last 25 years since the bypass project was first mooted. The commitment of €3 million as well as €14 million for Kerry in general is finally a sign that Kerry is being taken seriously and that comes on the back of a lot of hard work,” he said.

The Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, has welcomed confirmation of over €14 million in national roads funding for Kerry.
