Driving in Killarney ‘needs the patience of Job’

Gridlock: Traffic congestion in the town centre

Any motorists attempting to negotiate Killarney at present would require the patience of Job, it has been claimed.

Cllr Michael Cahill said traffic in the town is chaotic on a daily basis and the removal of unnecessary vehicles that are only passing through is “a no brainer” as a solution.

“The congestion in the town affects everyone, including visitors and the challenge of making deliveries, keeping appointments, attending a football game in Fitzgerald Stadium, going to work or even getting to a bus or train,” he said.

Cllr Michael Cahill: Bypass road urgently needed

Cllr Cahill said if Killarney wants to encourage people to visit the town Kerry to do their business or go shopping, and if visitors are to return to Killarney, action must be taken as a matter of extreme urgency.

“If the transient traffic could be filtered out it would make a massive, positive difference. Recent figures indicated that 7,000 vehicles were removed from Listowel when the bypass was opened there,” the Kerry Fianna Fáil general election canddiate said.

“The Minister for Transport, the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland must now take responsibility and allow the Killarney-Farranfore Bypass to proceed immediately,” stated Cllr Cahill.
