
THE Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was tasked to evacuate a female hillwalker who sustained a lower lower leg injury near the base of the Zig-Zags on Cnoc na Toinne on Saturday afternoon.
The emergency call-out was received at 3.50pm and a number of team volunteers on the hill assisted the casualty to Ard na Locha where she was evacuated by Landrover to Lisleibane.
Later in the afternoon, at approximately 6 o’clock, the team was called to another incident at the summit of Carrauntoohill where a male walker, aged in his in his 60s, had taken ill. Coastguard helicopter Rescue 115 was called to the scene but, due to dreadful weather conditions, it was unable to assist with the evacuation of the casualty.
Rescue volunteers climbed to the summit and treated the man at the scene before short-roping him down to Ard na Locha via the Devil’s Ladder.
The casualty was then taken by Landrover from Ard na Locha to an awaiting ambulance at Kissane’s Cross.
A total of 16 team members were involved in the rescue operation which concluded at 12.30am this morning.
