THERE was double cause for celebration for the team at The Brehon in Killarney after they were awarded two highly coveted accolades in the annual Hotel and Catering Review Gold Medal Awards.
Ireland’s Chef of the Year accolade went to head chef Chad Byrne, while the Angsana Spa received the top accolade in the Best Four Star Spa Experience.

Now in their 30th year, the Gold Medal Awards are recognised as the leading independent awards programme for the Irish hospitality industry. The awards were presented at a black-tie gala dinner in the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny.
Judged by industry experts, the awards recognise and reward excellence in hospitality and catering operations. They encourage and applaud hotels, restaurants, guest houses, spa and leisure facilities, event caterers, healthcare caterers, site caterers, as well as individuals and teams, that achieve the highest standard of product and service in the industry.
Katherine O’Riordan, Gold Medal Awards event director, remarked: “Ireland is world famous as a haven for hospitality and a budding foodie nation so the calibre of winners is no surprise. The judges had a tough job narrowing down the entries to these 31 outstanding properties and it’s particularly great to see the standards of the hospitality industry are equally high across the country”.
