Double delight as Athletic hit the town

THEY celebrated like they never celebrated before – and they were well entitled to.

Players, management, club officials and supporters turned out in big numbers at Killarney Racecourse for a gala dinner to celebrate Killarney Athletic AFC’s great double.

The blues won their first ever Premier league title with a dramatic replay win against town rivals Killarney Celtic and they followed that up by completing the double in style with a super KO Cup success.

At the Killarney Athletic dinner were, front from left, Emma Kennelly, Clare O’Shea, Mary O’Shea, Anne O’Shea and Anne Marie Kennelly with, at back from left, Tim O’Shea, Mark O’Shea, Killarney Parish Administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien, Killarney Athletic AFC Chairman Michael O’Shea and Paul O’Shea

Over 200 people were there to mark the greatest event in the club’s proud 52-year history and it was fitting that the man that made it all happen, former Killarney Garda Don Harrington, was among the VIP guests on the big occasion for the club he founded.

Also in attendance on the night were Minister of State for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin and Mayor of Kerry, Cllr John Sheahan and Killarney Garda Superintendent Flor Murphy while the Kerry District League was represented by Seán O’Keeffe and Tadhg Brosnan.

Club chairman Mike O’Shea presented Joe Daly with the Donal Brosnan memorial cup for his long-term service as vice-chairman, club coach and committed clubman.

Kerrie Beckett and senior talisman Paudie O’Connor stepped up to present Shane Lynch with the Sean O’Connor/Martin Beckett Memorial Perpetual Cup Player of the Year Award.

A vote of thanks and congratulations was extended to the dynamic senior team management team of Stuart Templeman and Alan Brady and above all to the senior players themselves for making it all happen.
