Donaghy, John Terry and the wrath of Jack

Kieran Donaghy travelled to the Champions League final in Munich despite a request not to

PASSIONATE Chelsea FC fan Kieran Donaghy cheered on former Blues skipper John Terry for years but imagine the Kerry veteran’s surprise when he discovered that the legendary England centre half was keeping tabs on him in return.

The 37-year-old former England defender, now with Aston Villa, posted a snapshot of Donaghy’s autobiography, What Do You Think Of That? on his Instagram account with the message: “Thank you @starryboy. Looking forward to reading your book”.

Like the Austin Stacks attacker in Gaelic games, Terry has been one of the outstanding players of his generation, leading Chelsea to five Premiership titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Cup and a Champions League crown.

Donaghy’s support for the Blues famously landed him in hot water with former Kerry boss Jack O’Connor who dropped his star full forward for a Munster Championship clash with Tipperary after he attended the Champions League final in Munich in 2012.

John Terry is looking forward to a good read

In his autobiography, Donaghy recalls that O’Connor had warned him that he would be dropped for the provincial championship first round game if he went to Germany.

Accepting his fate, Donaghy enjoyed the big clash between his beloved Chelsea and Bayern Munich and celebrated long into the night when Didier Drogba converted a spot kick to win the cup for the Blues.

True to his word, Jack sidelined Donaghy for the Tipp game but with things not going according to plan in the second half, he introduced the towering Tralee man from the bench.

Hilariously, as he was running on to the field, and within earshot of O’Connor on the sideline, Donaghy heard a game-for-a-laugh Kerry supporter on the terrace shouting: “G’wan Drogba!’

Commenting on John Terry’s Instagram post this week, according to a report on Joe.ie, Donaghy remarked: “He agreed I was dead right to go to the champions league final against Jack’s wishes”.
