The Masters at Augusta just wouldn’t the same without at least one Kerry jersey making an appearance in the golf-loving crowd but now, it seems, the phenomenon has caught on in the unlikely environment of a cricket stadium.

Not one but two Kingdom shirts were spotted at the Ireland v Sri Lanka Test series which got underway on Sunday and continues right through until the second Test concludes on April 28.

The Kerry fans spotted in the crowd were Don Keogh, from Killarney, and his son Donnchadh who took in the cricket while on holiday in a sun-kissed Sri Lanka.

They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had great fun with the local supporters who were fascinated to see the green and gold shirt and the navy Kerry away strip adding a splash of colour to proceedings in the Galle International Stadium.

Despite his long-time interest in the sport, Don, original from Upper Sunny Hill in Killarney and now a pharmacist in Sneem, didn’t get much of an opportunity to hone his cricket skills over the years as he preferred to concentrate on football with Dr Crokes before becoming the Sneem delegate to the Kerry County Board.

Donnchadh, who grew up in Sneem, is now residing in Queensland, Australia where he works as an electrician and father and son were thrilled to get the opportunity to enjoy some top class cricket as part of their vacation to the hotspot island in the Indian Ocean.

They also got an opportunity to meet with Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie and although the searing heat impacted on Ireland’s opening Test performance, with Sri Lanka completing the victory by an innings and 280 runs on day three in the city of Galle, they are hoping to make amends when play resumes after a few days of rest.
