Dirty gloves pose a real risk on the streets

A public notice calling for action issued by Kerry County Council

COVID-19 has created a nasty new breed of litter lout with a serious problem arising through the reckless discarding of used disposable gloves.

Reports of gloves being casually thrown to the ground and left for others to clean up, outside supermarkets, convenience stores and filling stations, have been widespread and Kerry County Council has now appealed to the public to dispose of the used gloves responsibly.

Concerns have also been raised that the plastic gloves, which had been used to cover people’s mouths and noses, could pose a major public health risk as efforts to stave off the threat of the coronavirus continue.

“There has been an increase of potentially contaminated gloves thrown on our streets and public areas,” a spokesperson for Kerry County Council remarked.

“If using protective items, such as plastic gloves, when out in public or when shopping, it is essential to dispose of them correctly”.

The public has been asked to place the gloves in the nearest bin or bring them home and dispose of them properly. Otherwise they are putting the health and safety of those left to pick them up to dispose them at risk.

“Failure to do so has environmental and public health risks for all,” the council spokesperson noted.

The campaign issued by the council features several snapshots of snapshots of gloves disposed of in an irresponsible fashion.
