Diocese reveals Lenten talks line-up

Retired school principal Jerh O’Donoghue will speak in Dingle

A VERY packed and informative line-up for the Lenten Programme in the Diocese of Kerry has been confirmed and it will commence on Monday, February 19 with a talk entitled The Christian Vision of Family by Bishop Kevin Doran, of the Diocese of Elphin, in St John’s Parish Church, Tralee (7.30pm).

On Thursday, February 22 Brother Pádraig McIntyre will address the topic of Finding Ourselves in the Lenten Jesus in the Heights Hotel, Killarney at 8.00pm. A native of Kenmare, Br Padraig worked as Director of Liturgical Music in the diocese for a number of years and is now a Benedictine monk in the Glenstal Abbey in Limerick.

Former Kerry Person of the Year Jerh O’Donoghue will speak in Benners Hotel, Dingle on February 27 when he will explore the topic, A parish caring for all people, at 7.30pm. All are welcome to the event and there is no admission fee.

Jerh, a native of Glenflesk, is married with two children. He has worked as a post-primary teacher and latterly as principal of Rathmore Community School. In 1975, he founded Rathmore Social Action Group which gives young people an opportunity to undertake community work and make a difference.

Since 1983 the Social Action Group has developed a care programme for older people. The group also provides facilities for young people and it has been very involved in sending aid to the developing world.

On February 28 Martina Lehane Sheehan will explore explore A Spirituality for the Home in the River Island Hotel, Castleisland at 8.00pm. She is an accredited psychotherapist and spiritual director and she regularly facilitates retreats and workshops on matters of spirituality and personal development. Martina has written widely on prayer and spirituality, as well as Christian mindfulness.

Martina will also speak in St John’s Theatre, The Square, Listowel on March 7 (8.00pm) when her chosen topic will be Living in each other’s shadow: Living, Forgiving and Healing.

On Monday, March 5, in Coláiste na Sceilge in Caherciveen, Fr Peter McVerry will talk on Homelessness: a challenge for society and Church. A Jesuit priest and author, he has worked with homeless young men in Dublin for nearly 40 years.

Spirituality for today will be the subject for Gerry Hussey in the Millstreet Pastoral Area on Wednesday, March 7. Gerry has been working at the fore front of Olympic and international sport since graduating from All Hallows’ College, Dublin. In his role as performance consultant, he has coached elite athletes for Olympic Games, Heineken Cups, European and World Championships, bringing an unrivalled wealth of honesty, experience and infectious passion to his work.

Gerry has also been lined up to speak at CYMS Killorglin at 8.00pm on March 8 when his topic will be Looking after body and Soul.

In Ardfert Retreat Centre on Monday, March 12, Dr Dan O’Connell will explore the question Is my family really a church and what might that mean? starting at 8pm. Dan unites his theological understandings with his experiences as husband and parent to offer thought-provoking, humorous insights on the family as a domestic church.

He is a lecturer in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and is one of the authors of Grow in Love which is the new Religious Education programme in primary schools.

On March 20 at 7.30 pm Dr Patricia Kieran will discuss Exploring Family Life in Ballylongford Community Centre, Kenmare Pastoral Area will host a public talk by theologian Dr Anne Francis in Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine, Kenmare on Monday, March 26 at 8.00pm while in St John’s Church, Tralee on March 26 Maria Garvey will explore Hidden Pearls: Revealing the gifts of people with disabilities in family and community at 7.30pm.

Maria is the leader of L’Arche Belfast, an interdenominational faith community and voluntary agency providing a service of support to people with intellectual disabilities. L’Arche was founded by Jean Vanier. Maria has been with L’Arche for 18 years and she is originally from Cork.
