LESS than 12 months after his sad passing, the magnificent voice of the late great Killarney entertainer Dermot Flynn rang out once more over the streets of the town this Monday afternoon.
The music pals with whom he performed every year at a charity open air busking session played a recording of his incredibly distinctive power-packed voice, with visitors and locals stopping in their tracks to listen.
For the past 30 years, local musicians have gathered at the Market Cross on August bank holiday Monday to strut their stuff and raise funds for Killarney Community Services and the South Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Association.
The late Dermot, who passed away last September, was always one of the stars of the show and those that listened to the recording this afternoon could hear just why.
And making it extra special, when Dermot’s song ended his son, Alan, took to the microphone to show that he had inherited a wonderful singing voice from his dad.
Dermot was the frontman of hugely successful dance band The Successors and he was a popular performer on the local entertainment circuit for over half a century. He was the resident entertainer in the Danny Mann lounge in the 1960s before the ballroom in the Gleneagle Hotel became his performing home.
A native of Lisheenbawn, Currow, who lived and reared his family in Ardshanavooley, Killarney, Dermot and his band once toured America, playing in Boston, Pennsylvania and several other states and they performed for film stars, senior church figures and even astronaut John Glenn.
Dermot also recorded a hit record, Memories of Killarney, in 1970.
