A well-known Killarney businessman, who is very prominent in motorsport circles, is to seek the green light to contest a seat on Kerry County Council in the June local elections.
Dermot Healy, a long-time member of Killarney and District Motor Club and clerk-of-the-course for the International Rally of the Lakes over a 10-year period, is one of three people who have expressed their intention to seek the nomination for Fine Gael in the Killarney Municipal District.
A motor dealer and property owner, Mr Healy is also very actively involved in Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and he plays an active role in the organisation of the town’s parades and festivals
The others seeking the nod from Fine Gael are Iqbal Mahmud and Kamaruzzaman Abdul Kadir, both natives of Bangladesh, who have been living in Killarney for a number of years.
Mr Mahmud, who works in the hotel industry, holds high office in the Islamic Cultural Centre in Killarney while Mr Kadir is also involved in the hospitality business in the town.
The three names will go before delegates at a Killarney branch of Fine Gael meeting this Wednesday night and, if desired, members can nominate all three to contest the election.
Party sources say other candidates might also come forward and express an interest in seeking a nomination in advance of the polls.
The meeting will also discuss the FG branch organisation at a local level given that Fine Gael has not held a seat on Killarney Municipal District Council since 2019.
