Derby delight lights up title race

imagesWHAT promises to be two enthralling East Kerry derbies will illuminate the opening round of the Kerry senior football championship on the June bank holiday weekend.

The county board has released provisional details of the dates and venues and Killarney Legion will play East Kerry in a game provisionally fixed for Friday, May 30 at Fitzgerald Stadium. The throw-in time has still to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, five-in-a-row chasing Dr Crokes will travel to Rathmore on Sunday, June with a 6.30pm start. Aidan O’Mahony and co will be hoping that the Rathbeg venue will help them to register a shock result against the championship specialists.

The Milltown/Castlemaine v West Kerry game has been brought forward to Sunday, May 25 – in Milltown – to facilitate teams participating in Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta.

On Saturday, May 31 Laune Rangers will host St Brendans, championship new boys Currow will have home advantage against St Michael’s/Foilmore and Kenmare must travel to Dingle with all games timed for 6.30pm.

There will be a double header in Listowel on Sunday afternoon with Shannon Rangers playing county league high-fliers Kilcummin and Feale Rangers taking on Austin Stacks.

In Caherciveen at 2.30pm meanwhile, South Kerry will be hoping that the home venue will be an advantage when they entertain Kerins O’Rahillys while St Kierans will take on Mid Kerry in Castleisland, also at 2.30pm.

The losers’ round will be played the following weekend.
