Demolition job complete at Armagh House

Going: Armagh House before it was knocked

A LANDMARK dormer bungalow, which has been earmarked to provide accommodation for the homeless in Killarney, has been demolished in the past 24 hours.

Armagh House on Park Road has been knocked to facilitate a new purpose-built development on the site.

Going: the demolition in progress

The property was purchased by charity housing body Clúid, with the support of Kerry County Council and the Department of the Environment, but although it is in the pipeline since 2016, it was recently confirmed that the project will not now be completed until 2020.

Gone: the house was levelled this evening

The roadside building, a former guesthouse, has been vacant for over a decade and boarded up for a number of years. It is located on the outskirts of the town centre, immediately adjacent to McDonald’s Restaurant and the Friary Downs housing development and close to the familiar railway bridge.

In December 2016, Cllr Donal Grady, a long-time champion of the homeless, called for the house to be opened up for those without a home of their own.

It has since emerged that the estimated completion date for the project is now February 2020 and development work will not get underway until next January. The council and Clúid plans to provide six one-bedroom units in the house.

Clúid is a not-for-profit charity providing affordable, high quality homes to people in housing need.
