A WONDERFUL folk tradition known as mumming – which combines music, dance and theatrical sword fighting – was staged in Killarney National Park by Cultural and Heritage Studies students at Cloaiste Stiofáin Naoife in Cork.
The wild and chaotic folk drama is described as a battle between Carnival and Lent and the sword fighting element adds a real touch of high-end drama to the festivities.
The mumming performance was staged in the Garden Restaurant at Muckross House and it went down a real treat by those lucky enough to be there to enjoy it.
The traditional folk play is very popular in many areas of Europe but particularly common in England, Scotland and Ireland and it reenacts old battles with the death and revival of a characters. The name derives from a French word meaning masked.
