HE was the marquee player in Kerry GAA last season and it looks like it’s only going to get bigger and better for super talented Fossa teenager David Clifford.
He has been chosen as captain of the Kerry minors for 2017 and he will lead his team-mates into action as Peter Keane hopes to inspire the Kingdom to an unprecedented four titles in a row.
David has been nominated by the East Kerry Board following the divisional side’s county minor championship success and his captaincy was ratified at a meeting of the county board last night.
He finished 2016 with an All-Ireland minor medal, a Hogan Cup medal with St Brendan’s College and an East Kerry Minor Championship winner’s medal added to his growing collection of honours.
And that was only for starters.
In addition to several man-of-the-match awards, the unassuming and supremely talented young Fossa clubman also beat senior players from every county to win the TG4 goal of the season award for his stunning All-Ireland final goal against Galway which sealed Kerry’s All-Ireland final win.
He set off on a dramatic solo run from midfield, toe to hand and at great pace, and he sold a super dummy before slamming the ball beyond the reach of the Galway goalkeeper to the corner of the net.
It was a typical move by the skilful teenager who has been a stand-out player right through the juvenile ranks and is one one of the most exciting prospects in the game.
