WHEN he set up his new business way back in 1982, innovative Killarney man David Fleming revolutionised the art of sign writing, quickly building up a loyal local trade and soon making his mark not only all over the country but around the globe.
Sika Signs quickly became the go-to place for all types of signage – in all shapes and sizes – using a variety of materials and very soon the company expanded to incorporate Sika Safety which concentrated on safety signs and attire.

David and his staff built up a huge trade and chances are all the signage you see on the roads – whether it’s advising of major road works ahead or simply wishing a local team well for a sporting occasion – originated from the Sika headquarters in the Woodlands Industrial Estate, off the Killarney Bypass Road.
This week David said farewell to his business as he prepared for retirement after a very successful 36 years at the top, working side by side with his wife, Doreen. Also on hand were his family Cillian, Sinead, Caoimhe, Aoife, David, Aria Fleming and Roger Harmon.
Daughter Aoife, David’s right hand woman, helped her dad to print off his last job on Friday evening which read ‘Barbados’ for Liebherr Cranes.
And while he may be heading into retirement, the legacy of David Flkemng and Sika Signs will still be seen on the highways and byways of Ireland – and as far away as Barbados – for some time to come.
