Dashing David joins the elite

David Clifford: All-Star winner

HE already has Hogan Cup, provincial and All-Ireland minor medals and a Munster senior championship medal in his cabinet and now the boy wonder, David Clifford, can add a prestigious All-Star award to his collection.

The brilliant Kerry hotshot has been named in this year’s All-Star team, the only Kerryman to feature alongside seven Dubs, three from Monaghan, two from Tyrone, one from Donegal and one from Galway.

The 20-year-old from Fossa, who had a superb debut season at senior level, has been named at right corner forward following a series of accomplished displays in the championship.

Kerry’s only other nominee, defender Gavin White, did not make the final 15.

Champions Dublin have a total of seven players on the team after winning their fourth title in succession although veteran goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton was pipped to the post by star Monaghan netminder Rory Beggan.

Dublin are now second in the all-time list of All-Star winners with 123 behind Kerry which has 141.

GAA President John Horan chaired a selection committee made up of senior Gaelic Games correspondents to decide on the team.

David Clifford is also in the running for the young player of the year award and the players will be honoured at an awards ceremony to be broadcast live on RTÉ 1 on Friday from 7pm.
